Honouring our champions: U of T Scarborough celebrates distinguished service

U of T Scarborough had an exceptional 2015 with many firsts—the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre became a campus hub, hosting world-renowned athletes and during the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games, and the Environmental Science and Chemistry building opened and received LEED Gold status. These are two of many successes creating a vibrant community at UTSC and showcasing Scarborough as a true destination in the GTA—achievements that wouldn’t be possible without the students, faculty and staff who comprise our community.

“It’s the people who make this campus such an amazing place to be,” said U of T Scarborough Principal Bruce Kidd. “Whether beautifying the campus, inspiring students, contributing to the research enterprise or fundraising for scholarships, we are all champions showcasing the sustained excellence of our faculty, staff and students. It’s an honour to take time to acknowledge our exceptional champions at UTSC.”

Interim Vice-Principal Academic and Dean, Professor William Gough presented Professor Emeritus Eric Wayne Dowler with special recognition for his continued service to UTSC. After retiring in 2011, Dowler subsequently joined the Dean’s Office as Dean’s Designate for the Code of Behaviour on Academic Matters in 2012. Dowler worked to promote academic integrity on campus and partnered with academics and administrators across campus.

This annual ceremony includes three streams: Principal’s Awards, Research Awards, and Teaching and Learning Awards. The first award presentation was the D.R. Campbell Merit Award, awarded to an individual who made an outstanding contribution to UTSC. Its recipient was Hasna Syed, a 2016 graduate whose accomplishments span from politics to music. Syed was President of the Political Science Student Association, led the first delegation of U of T students to attend the Youth Assembly at the United Nations and is also a singer and songwriter—along with two of her younger siblings who also attend UTSC. In late 2015, Syed was also named an Urban Hero by the Scarborough Mirror for inspiring those in Scarborough through community work and music. What’s next for Syed? She’ll be attending the London School of Economics and Political Science to pursue a master’s degree in human rights.

Sustainability Project Coordinator and UTSC alumnus, Nadia Harduar, was recognized for outstanding staff service with the Patrick Phillips Award as she was instrumental in helping UTSC achieve Fair Trade status earlier this month.

New this year were the introduction of three Principal’s Awards to recognize contributions made by administrative staff who support the strategic priorities of the campus. The Principal’s Accomplished Leader award went to Colleen Reid, the Principal’s Emerging Leader award to Naureen Nizam and the Principal’s Long Service award to Gail Copland.

Also new were the addition of two Research Awards, including the Research Excellence Faculty Scholar award, presented to Professors Michael Inzlicht (Psychology), Lisa Jeffrey (Mathematics) and Frank Wania (Environmental Science and Chemistry); and the UTSC Library Undergraduate Research Prize, presented to Nishita Agrawal (Management), Cherrie Yan Ning Kwok (Psychology) and Swara Shah (Biological Science).

Teaching and Learning Awards were led by Faculty Teaching awards presented to Professors Christopher Cochrane (Political Science) and Francisco J. Estrada (Computer and Mathematical Sciences). View the full list of award-winners below and see photos from the event on our Facebook page.
