Resettling Jaffna: Ethnic and Caste Relations in Post War Sri Lanka


In 2009, the Sri Lankan civil war ended brutally. Alongside the triumphant and troubling extension of state sovereignty over the war zone areas, new possibilities and old ghosts animate post-war northern Jaffna. The talk contrasts the re-establishment of inter-ethnic life between ethnic minorities, Tamils and Muslims, along with the re-establishment of intra-ethnic caste segregated Tamil life in Jaffna.The talk will ask how the longstanding mobility and displacements of the civil war has come to shape current manifestations of caste, and Tamil and Muslim attempts to live with intimate others.
