Prepare to launch: UTSC grad wins $100K for map-based startup

Ravi Ravindran (BSc, 2015), was awarded $100,000 in funding for his app Mapian.

It’s a $100,000 idea, and he’s just getting started.

Ravi Ravindran (BSc, 2015) has a neuroscience and psychology degree from U of T Scarborough, but his app, Mapian, will be an online community that provides smartphone users with user-generated and geo-tagged content using digital maps, offering localized interactions with friends, feedback on places, venues and events. (watch this video to learn more). And it has just received the top prize – an investment of $100,000 – in a gruelling competition for entrepreneurs.

The Launchpad is a Toronto-based competition for Tamil entrepreneurs across North America. Over the last couple of weeks, contestants pitched their ideas, Dragons-Den style, to a panel of judges.

Ravindran refined the idea for the app at The Hub, UTSC’s early-stage innovation and business incubator. He has since lined up private investment and this cash infusion will help him push towards his launch in early 2016.

Watch Ravindran make his initial pitch during the Launchpad semi-final episode.
