Canadian author Miriam Toews named UTSC's inaugural Writer-in-Residence

Celebrated Canadian author Miriam Toews will be UTSC's inaugural Writer-in-Residence.

The University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) and the Department of English are pleased to announce that award-winning novelist Miriam Toews will be the inaugural UTSC Writer-in-Residence for the Winter 2014 term.

Toews is one of Canada's most gifted and well-loved storytellers. The author of five novels and one book of non-fiction, she has won many of this country's most prestigious literary awards, including the Governor General's Award for Fiction, the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, the Writer's Trust Engel/Findley Award for a body of work and CBC's annual book competition Canada Reads. Earlier this year Toews' accomplishments were recognized by her home province as she was awarded the Order of Manitoba.

While at UTSC, Toews will contribute to the campus community by visiting classes, facilitating workshops, delivering readings and consulting with students on manuscripts-in-progress. Just as importantly, Toews will also have dedicated time to work on her next creative project.

"I'm really looking forward to being the Writer-In-Residence at U of T Scarborough," says Toews. "It's always fun and inspiring to meet students and to talk about writing and I'm also excited about the opportunity to work on some of my own stuff, as well."

The appointment of Ms. Toews comes at an exciting time for the UTSC English Department. This fall the department launched its new Minor in Creative Writing, one of only a handful of undergraduate creative writing programs available in Canada.

“We are so thrilled to welcome Miriam Toews as our inaugural Writer-in-Residence,” says Alice Maurice, Acting Chair of the English Department. “Our Creative Writing program serves a vibrant community of writers on campus, and to have someone of Ms. Toews’ caliber in our midst throughout the Winter term will provide a fantastic opportunity for our students, for the Department, and for the entire campus.”
