Reception from 5 – 9 pm
Lecture at 7 pm
Doris McCarthy Gallery
University of Toronto Scarborough

Free shuttle bus to the DMG departs Hart House (7 Hart House Circle) at 6 pm, returning at 9 pm

Wafaa Bilal will discuss specific bodies of work including 3rdi, Domestic Tension (aka Shoot an Iraqi) and Virtual Jihadi, elaborating on the evolution of his practice and reflecting on his personal narrative and experiences living in both the conflict zone of Iraq and the comfort zone of the United States. Bilal’s dynamic, participatory work blends technology and performance to engage viewers in dialogue. The controversial aspects of his work spark deeper conversation, posing questions about political and personal realities. Bilal’s work places him in the role of artist as platform initiator, helping to shift and change distribution channels in media.

The lecture is co-presented with Cultural Pluralism for the Arts, part of the Department of Arts, Culture & Media at the University of Toronto Scarborough
