Geography students launch publication

Geography students at UTSC are launching a new online publication called On the Move: an undergraduate journal of creative geographies.

“There is much more to geography than just memorizing capital cities,” says Madeleine K. Smith, project coordinator of On the Move. “As geography students, we are using creative expression to bring together our academic studies and experiences of the world around us.”

Over the past semester, eight students have been working closely with Professor Ju Hui Judy Han in preparing the publication. On the Move plans to continue to publish creative geography writings by students in the future.

“This is an opportunity to extend the space of learning beyond the classroom, and to encourage students to think of writing as beyond assignments and term paper,” says Han. “Critical and reflexive writing can take all forms including personal stories.”

“I have loved working with other likeminded students, and learning from each other,” says Marziyeh Sheraze, a third-year geography and psychology student involved in On the Move. “This project has really encouraged me to look for stories in unexpected places, and has taught me to never stop creating."

The launch event will take place from 5 to 7 pm on Thursday, April 4, 2013, in the Ralph Campbell Lounge (BV380) at UTSC. The evening will include a reception with light refreshments and short readings by contributing writers.
