UTSC celebrates Mental Health Awareness Month

The University of Toronto Scarborough will host a series of workshops and guest lectures this month, including an appearance by Canadian musician Steven Page, in celebration of Mental Health Awareness Month.

Organized through UTSC’s Health & Wellness Centre, AccessAbility Services, and in collaboration with the campus community, the programming aims to educate students, faculty and staff on mental health issues and to promote an awareness of the mental health services available on campus and in the surrounding area.

The events kick off at noon on Oct. 10 with Mental Health Understood, an information fair featuring interactive displays by campus and community groups that focus on mental well-being.

Later that afternoon, Professor and UTSC Principal Franco Vaccarino will deliver a keynote address to launch the UTSC Mental Health Network, a new campus initiative that brings faculty, staff, students and community partners together to share, discuss and educate each other on issues of mental health. Principal Vaccarino is a world-renowned expert on mental health and addiction issues.

The celebrations will culminate on Oct. 24 with a live appearance by Steven Page, the former Barenaked Ladies frontman, who will discuss his well-publicized struggles with mental health in a lecture entitled Mental Wellness: Finding Balance. Page will also perform selections from his music.
