Mountain of toys a mountain of fun for UTSC students

SCSU president Pagalavan Thavarajah and UTSC student Ayan Talukder next to a growing pile of toys donated to the Toy Mountain campaign. UTSC students were at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto on December 21 for a skate and to support the toy drive.

It was a night of fun and festive cheer as UTSC students came out to support a worthy cause while skating the evening away at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto.

Even a bit of rain did nothing to damper the collective spirit of those UTSC students who made the trip downtown to support the Toy Mountain drive while getting a chance to skate on the large outdoor rink next to Lake Ontario.

“Everyone here came for the same reason – they have a real passion for our community,” says Pagalavan (Pags) Thavarajah, president of the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU).

“Our campus has a lot of spirit but it’s not always focused on one thing. This event brings together all the groups on campus and really represents what the One Love campaign is all about.”

This was the first time an official UTSC event was held in cooperation with Toy Mountain. Tom Brown from CTV News did his live broadcast from the Harbourfront Centre as students skated in the background, while DJ Sean Stealth and DJ MK provided spun music throughout the evening.

Meanwhile, free skating lessons were offered by the Scarborough Campus Hockey Players Association and the UTSC Carolers sang holiday tunes.

The event, spearheaded by UTSC student Ayan Talukder, represents all of UTSC coming together for one important cause.

“We wanted to support the One Love campaign, but more importantly we wanted to give back to the community,” says Talukder. “The support has been amazing.”
