Our House athletics facility campaign kicks off

Paige Schultz

The “Our House” campaign launched earlier this week, designed to inform students about the new Athletic Facility which is being built for the 2015 Pan Am Games.

UTSC student and Pan Am bronze medalist Paige Schultz spoke at the kickoff event in the Student Centre. Schultz was part of the Canadian 4X100 meter women’s relay team which came in third at the Guadalajara games in October.

“Bringing the Pan Am Games to Toronto is so exciting,” Schultz told students at the event. “It’s going to be a state-of-the-art facility. It’s going to be amazing.”

The athletics complex being built on land jointly owned by the University of Toronto and the city will include the Pan American Aquatics Centre, Field House and Canadian Sport Institute Ontario.

The Aquatics Centre will seat 6,000 and feature two 10-lane, 52-metre-long pools and a 5.5-metre-deep diving tank. The Field House will seat 2,000 and provide an indoor recreational track, fitness facilities and gymnasium space for training and competition. The Canadian Sport Institute Ontario will become a national high-performance sports centre, which will offer coaching and training facilities, along with sports-science and sports-medicine services.

After the Games, the facility will serve the local community as a much-needed recreation centre, as well as a hub for high-performance and university sports events and activities.

The Our House promotion is being organized jointly by the SCSU and the SCAA. It is intended as a way for students to gain information, in-site and provide feedback on the progress of the new Athletic Facilities.
