Today’s student-led town hall on new athletics complex features Toronto mayor

A Town Hall meeting has been organized by students at the University of Toronto Scarborough for Wednesday, March 3 at 11:45 a.m. in the Student Centre Food Court.

Toronto Mayor David Miller will be among the guest speakers at the event, which also features: Liz Warden, former Olympic athlete and U of T alumna; Alex Dow, community coordinator of Malvern Action for Neighbourhood Change; and Professor Franco Vaccarino, the principal of UTSC. Student speakers are Amir Bashir, acting president of the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union (SCSU) and John Kapageridis, president of the Scarborough College Athletics Association (SCAA).

The speakers will talk about the proposed athletic facility and its impact on, and benefits to, student life and the broader community. The event has been organized by two student groups, the SCSU and the SCAA. Students have organized the event to provide more details about the creation of a new athletics and recreation complex and the upcoming referendum (March 17 to 19) on a student levy.

The proposal calls for a state-of-the-art athletic facility with two Olympic-sized, 52-metre swimming pools, a 10-metre diving tank, multipurpose gymnasiums, a running track, racquet courts, and fitness and training areas.

Refreshments will be served at the town hall meeting. For more details about the athletics complex and upcoming referendum, click here.
