Tune in to professor’s TV talk for best lecturer competition

TELEVISION TALK: Steve Joordens is one of ten finalists from across Ontario for TVO's Best Lecturer. Tune in on Sat., March 6 and Sunday, March 7 at 5 p.m.

Don’t miss the upcoming lecture by U of T Scarborough psychology professor Steve Joordens, who has been named one of the ten finalists from across the province for TVO’s Best Lecturer. His talk airs on Saturday, March 6 and on Sunday, March 7, at 5 p.m. both days on TVO’s Big Ideas program.

Joordens’ lecture topic is titled, “You Can Lead Student Knowledge, But How Do You Make Them Think? Challenges to Teaching Critical Thinking Skills within University Settings.”

The other finalists are: Monika Havelka (U of T Mississauga); Bruce Meyer (Laurentian at Georgian College); Eleanor MacDonald and Virginia Walker (Queen's); Sohail Rashid (Ryerson); Rupinder Brar (UOIT); David Gray (Ottawa); Nadia Habib and Karolyn Smardz Frost (York).

After each lecture, viewers can submit their votes online at or by calling toll free at 1-877-792-VOTE (8683). Starting at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6 until 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 11, viewers will be able to submit grades for any, or all, of this year's finalists. A panel of judges will also rate the lectures. Voting closes on April 11 and the winner will be announced on April 17.

The lecture series is sponsored by TD Insurance Meloche Monnex, and the winning lecturer’s institution will receive a $10,000 scholarship. A new contest has also been set up for viewers who go to to submit their vote online. Participants are eligible to win a $5,000 grand prize pack which includes: a laptop, HD camcorder, digital SLR still camera, an iPod touch, and an iTunes gift card. A weekly contest during the voting period will also allow viewers to enter to win a portable reader. For more details, click here.
