Doris McCarthy Gallery exhibit, namesake artist, nominated for 2005 Untitled Art Awards

The nominees for the 2005 Untitled Art Awards were recently announced and the Doris McCarthy Gallery exhibition Angela Leach: Shimmy, curated by Ann MacDonald and Gordon Hatt, is nominated for Best Solo or Group Exhibition in a Public Gallery, sharing the category with exhibitions at venues such as The Power Plant, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art.

UTSC graduate, and gallery namesake, Doris McCarthy has been nominated for the second time for  the Life-time Achievement Award.

"We hope this will be her year for recognition," says Ann MacDonald, Doris McCarthy Gallery curator.

The Awards are the brainchild of professional artists Jordan Broadworth and the late Lynn Donoghue. With an eye on the well-awarded realms of music, TV, theatre and film, they recognized an opportunity to establish an annual Art Awards event akin to the Junos, Genies, Doras and Geminis, which would pay tribute to all aspects of the active visual arts community in Toronto.

These community-based awards collect nominations from the public. A jury of artists and arts professionals selects a short list of the best artists, curators, art writers and supporters in 12 different categories.

Winners are announced at the Awards Gala, which will take place on March 1, 2006 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre.
