New communications director excited about UTSC

UTSC’s new director of communications and public affairs had always heard good things about the campus. Now Shelley Romoff says that she’s excited to be a part of it.

“I’ve always heard about UTSC as a place that celebrates diversity, that’s inclusive and accessible. And that’s what a university should be about,” she says.

Romoff comes to the post with more than 20 years of experience in communications in academic environments. She led communications teams at The Hospital for Sick Children, York University and the University of Buffalo. She was also manager of advancement communications during U of T’s $1 billion Great Minds campaign.

“Shelley’s an experienced communications professional with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. We’re thrilled to have her here at UTSC,” says Andrew Arifuzzaman, UTSC chief administrative officer.

Romoff spent the past 18 months as an independent consultant, which she enjoyed. But she says she’s looking forward to working as a member of a team again.

“There are great stories around every corner here. I’m thrilled to be a part of the team that tells those stories,” she says.

Romoff received her BA from Kenyon College and a Masters of Journalism and Communications from the University of Florida, where she received the Student Research Award. She has also been recognized with awards from the US Information Agency; NAFSA: Association of International Educators; the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education; and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

“Higher education has been my life, or most of it,” she says.
