Awards Recognizing the Strength of Our Diversity
In the spring of 2008, Leo van den Thillart and his family donated $40,000 to establish the first scholarship of its kind, the van den Thillart Leadership Award for Canadian Immigrants which recognizes the challenges new immigrants face and the contribution they make to Canadian society. The scholarship would provide financial assistance to an upper-year student in the Management Co-op Program who was born outside of Canada but is a citizen or permanent resident so that they may have the same opportunities to study business at UTSC, as did Mr. van den Thillart. “By supporting the academic achievements and leadership of students in the co-op program, many of whom were born outside Canada, this gift is a tangible recognition of the strength of our diversity,” says Franco Vaccarino, principal, UTSC and vice president, U of T. In 2009 Mr. van den Thillart committed another $40,000 to establish the van den Thillart Excellence in Management Entrance Scholarship awarded to a student entering the Bachelor of Business Administration degree directly from secondary school, on the basis of excellent achievement and financial need.
Mr. van den Thillart is Managing Partner with Brookfield Asset Management where he is responsible for global fundraising for Brookfield’s Private Funds.
Leo van den Thillart is a wonderful example of how our UTSC alumni have a keen sense of civic responsibility, giving back and paving the way for tomorrow’s global leaders.
