UTSC’s Instructional Centre officially open

The new Instructional Centre (IC) was filled with VIPs when it officially opened on August 31.

UTSC’s Vice-President and Principal Franco Vaccarino and U of T President David Naylor welcomed U of T Chancellor, the Honorable David Peterson; Corneliu Chisu, Federal Member of Parliament, Pickering-Scarborugh East; Bas Balkissoon, MPP, Scarborough-Rouge River; the Honourable John Milloy, Ontario Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities; and Richard Nunn, Chair, Governing Council, U of T – in addition to several other VIPs.

The IC increases academic space on campus by 25 per cent.  At 165,000 square feet, the $78 million IC is the largest building to be constructed since 1966, when the original Andrews Building was completed, establishing the UTSC campus. It offers more student study rooms, lecture halls and classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art digital technology; a high-tech trading floor with double-monitor workstations and an LCD stock ticker; and a microprocessor lab. Also LEED Silver–certified, the building will feature green roofs and solar panels on the rooftop. La Prep café is opening in the IC in the fall.

The UTSC Instructional Centre was supported by an investment of $35 million by the Government of Canada, through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, and a matching $35-million contribution from the Government of Ontario.
